Cuisine and Cultural Heritage Festival
From August through November, the Curaçao Tourist Board sponsors a festival of weekly events for visitors to truly experience the cuisine, art, history, music and dance of Curaçao's multicultural heritage. During this period, museum entrances are free or discounted, and galleries, gift shops and restaurants offer a 10 percent discount with your VIT (Very Important Tourist) Pass, which is free from the Tourist Board or curacaoculture.com. Local groups perform free concerts in Willemstad parks, while storytellers describe folklore, legends and myths. Living history presentations recount the struggles of the slaves, and folklore performances recreate music and dances that date back for centuries.
At the Caribbean Hotel Association's 2006 Taste of the Caribbean competition, Curaçao's culinary team brought home both the gold medal and the coveted Caribbean Chef of the Year awards. During the Cuisine and Cultural Heritage Festival, you can sample dishes created by Curaçao's renowned chefs at participating restaurants. Or, for a sample of local cuisine, visit the "Plasa Bieu," Willemstad's covered market where you can enjoy "kuminda kri-yo-yo" or local food dishes, which are cooked over a coal burner. On Thursdays and Fridays, visitors can enjoy a mixed platter lunch especially prepared for them and visit heart-to-heart with the locals.
