In 2009, the Renaissance Curaçao Hotel & Casino opened its doors in Willemstad with 237 rooms, a sea-themed restaurant, private beach, infinity pool and the Carnaval Casino. The architecture and multicolor façade of the hotel mirror the Dutch colonial buildings along the Willemstad waterfront, and the bold colors and patterns of the lobby and rooms reflect the Carnival theme.
The 27-acre Hyatt Regency Curaçao Resort opened in 2010 with 350 rooms, a tennis club, dive center, marina and an 18-hole championship golf course. The new resort offers gourmet dining, farm-to-table local cuisine, pool, spa facility, private beach, and sailing and boating.
By the end of 2011, renovations and expansions of 10 existing properties added another 530 rooms to the island’s already stellar resort scene. Curaçao is meeting its goals and expanding its reputation as a favorite Caribbean destination.
The Boom Is On
Despite a periodic decrease in cruise ship tourism around the world, the prospects look promising for Curaçao with ships from 16 cruise lines docking in Willemstad’s colorful port.
Air arrivals continue to increase steadily. When Gol Airlines added flights from Brasilia, the number of Brazilian visitors increased over 100 percent. American Airlines offers multiple daily flights from Miami, and Continental Airlines/United flies into Curaçao twice a week from Newark. InselAir, Curaçao’s local carrier, flies daily from Miami and Charlotte, NC.
“Arrivals from the U.S. rebounded 32 percent in 2010 and rose 29 percent for the first quarter in 2011,” said Andre Rojer, Marketing Manager for Curaçao Tourism Board, North America. “Arrivals from Canada increased by 12 percent.”
Gay travelers represent another increasing market. “Curaçao’s official ‘We Live and Let Live’ policy sets it apart in the Caribbean,” Mr. Rojer said. “As a member of the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association, Curaçao has a website dedicated to gay travel: gaycuracao.com.”
10-10-10: Celebrate!
On the tenth day of the tenth month of 2010, Curaçao and St. Maarten became independent countries in the Dutch Commonwealth. New constitutional reforms are reshaping economic policies and streamlining foreign investment regulations. With a stable political system, high standard of living, well-developed tourism facilities and a high-tech infrastructure, the 171-square-mile island begins nationhood with a strong global brand.
Curaçao, with its 38 sparkling beaches, 160 world-class dive sites, new hotels and resorts, and cultural fusion of traditions, music and cuisine, welcomes tourists from around the world for a better-than-ever Caribbean holiday.
