CARMABI
What is CARMABI? The Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity a non-profit foundation on the island of Curaçao established in 1955 as a marine research institute. CARMABI now manages 9 protected areas in Curaçao, including; the 1860 hectare Christoffel Park, Curacao Marine Park, the new Savonet Museum and Research Station Carmabi. CARMABI exists to support the sustainable development of nature and natural resources through research, nature management and education.
In September of 2010, CARMABI launched the newest museum in Curaçao, The Savonet Museum in the heart of Christoffel Park. Its restored buildings were once the Savonet Plantation and the formal plantation house or, landhuis. Visitors can take a peak into the lives of the former inhabitants of the area, starting with the first Arowak Indians who lived here nearly 4,000 years ago! State of the art audio-visual aids, historic artefacts and photographs from descendents and slaves, restored antiques all tell the history of the area and the interdependence between humans and nature. Long-term exhibition includes: Indian Period, Plantation Cooking, Herbs for Medicinal Use, Life of the Shon and Slaves, Marital Life, Death, Spiritual Life on the Plantations, Crops, Milkhouse, Tannery and Saltpen.
There is currently an additional fee to enter the museum. Tour groups of a maximum of 25 people can make reservations by calling: 864-0363 or mailing info@savonetmuseum.org.
